Sean's Comedy Corner: The Great Muppet Caper

Sean's Comedy Corner

In a comedy rut? Looking for something new to tickle your funny bone?  I've scoured the internet and beyond to bring you these comedy gems.

Episode Four

The Great Muppet Caper

"I'm Out!"

I'm a comedy nerd.  Growing up I loved and would search out anything and everything related to comedy.  To that end, there have been 3 major influences on my comedy career.  3 forces that have shaped the comedian I am today.  They are Saturday Night Live (specifically '86 to '93), The Monkees (more on them in a later post), and The Muppets.

There have been thousands of articles and books written about the greatness of the Muppets.  So I don't need to explain my love or why they are so influential.  But I do want to talk about one of their movies... or rather, one specific scene in one of their movies.

The Great Muppet Caper was the Muppets' second movie.  While funny, it doesn't hold a candle to the original Muppet Movie.  That said, it contains two of the funniest moments I believe have ever committed to film.  And they both occur within 30 seconds of each other.

"...walk around naked..."
Comedy is edgy.

Hearing a Muppet talking about nudity blew my little ten year-old mind.  I didn't know Muppets could talk about getting naked.  Heck,  I never realized Muppets could even get naked.  I knew the joke was dirty, inappropriate and definitely not meant for me.  And I loved it.  Suddenly I realized comedy could be a little dangerous.  And if done right, dangerous comedy could hide in the most family-friendly of places.

"I'm out."
Comedy is unexpected.

You've seen scenes like this dozen of times.  It's the rally the troops moment.  The all for one and one for all moment.  It's meant to be inspiring, stirring, uplifting.  Yet, with a single line, Floyd shattered those expectations.  The fact that Kermit's buddies would so quickly abandon him was a curveball that came out of nowhere. Perfectly and hilariously unexpected.   I have spent the rest comic life looking for those perfect unexpected moments.

Episode Three

Man Stroke Woman

Men vs Women = Funny

Man Stroke Woman was a British sketch comedy show that explored the differences between men and women.  The show ran for two, 6 episode seasons, from 2005 to 2007.

Fantasy Shag

The Hang Over

The show starred a 6 member, ensemble cast that featured Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead) and Amanda Abbington (Sherlock).  The sketches were short, usually a minute or two in length.  They tackled the typical issues between men and women - dating, relationships, marriage, and parenting... and cranked them up to 11.

The Break Up

Many of the sketches can be found on YouTube.  Sean Hayes (Will and Grace) attempted to launch an American version that never got past the pilot stage.

Sean's Comedy Corner: The Thin Man

Sean's Comedy Corner

In a comedy rut? Looking for something new to tickle your funny bone?  I've scoured the internet and beyond to bring you these comedy gems.

Episode Two

The Thin Man

Mix 1 oz murder mystery, 2 oz screwball comedy and 1 little dog.
Shake well.

The Thin Man was a 1934 comedy/mystery starring William Powell and Myrna Loy.  It was based on the  Dashiell Hammett novel of the same name and spawned 5 sequels, a radio show, tv series, stage play and Broadway musical.  Powell and Loy played Nick and Nora Charles.  Nick was a retired detective who never met a cocktail he didn't like.  Nora was his socialite wife who shared his love of the cocktail and was constantly scheming to get her husband back into the detective game (so she could tag along).

Nick and Nora Charles

The highlight of any Thin Man movie was the interaction between Powell and Loy, with the mystery aspect of the story taking a back seat to the two's comedy antics.  Their chemistry was so strong that many of the movie-going public thought they were married in real life.  The duo improvised many of their scenes.

Nick and Nora's Best Alcohol Moments

While the Thin Man is often thought to be Nick Charles, he's actually the character Charles is hired to find.  The name became so associated with the character that it was used in all the sequels.

Sean's Comedy Corner: 7 Minutes in Heaven

Sean's Comedy Corner

In a comedy rut? Looking for something new to tickle your funny bone?  I've scoured the internet and beyond to bring you these comedy gems.

Episode One

7 Minutes in Heaven

Part talk show, part improv, part middle school rite of passage.

7 Minutes in Heaven was a web series/talk show hosted by Mike O'Brien.  O'Brien is an I/O and Second City Alum.  He is a member of the legendary I/O Harold team The Reckoning and was a writer for SNL from 2009 to 2015.  He became a featured player from 2013 to 2014, and sporadically contributed films to the show after that.

7 Minutes in Heaven is a talk show like none other.  For starters, it takes place in a closet and ends just like its namesake, the middle school party game.  In between is an eclectic mix of improv, stream of consciousness and plain-old weirdness.  His guests ranged from acclaimed actors and actresses, SNL alum, and more (Ellen, Hoda Kotb and the Insane Clown Posse to name a few).

Will Ferrell

Jeff Goldblum

Tracy Morgan

Christina Ricci

7 Minutes in Heaven ran sporadically from 2011 to 2016 and was produced by Lorne Michael's Above Average.

Lessons Learned: October 3-9, 2009

This is what I learned this week.

Lessons Learned: October 3rd through October 9th.

*I should not look at an open bar as a challenge. (I realize I've written this before... but I obviously didn't learn my lesson the first time.)
*Jello shots at weddings are magical.
*I don't have ADD... I'm just bored with everything around me.
*Sometimes I can be really mean.
*There's nothing wrong with denial.
*I like being surrounded by people... even if I have absolutely no desire to speak with any of them.
*Late night dance parties in my kitchen should happen more often.
*I can dip a girl like nobody's business.
*7am is not an appropriate hour to go to bed... especially when I have to be at work by 9.
*The Pushers are either on the verge of something great or headed for an imminent collapse... I'm not sure which I'm rooting for.
*I make mistakes.
*And finally to steal from The Muppets... I think I lost my sense of direction.
